Healthy Pet Food Choices at Lakeshore Animal Hospital

services_pet_nutrition_01.pngYour pet's skin should be smooth and soft with little or no flaking or redness. It should not have areas of hair loss or signs of irritation. The food your pet eats plays an important role in his or her health and well-being. When your pet has a food allergy or related skin condition, it’s even more important to feed him the right food. Allergic reactions are commonly associated with protein sources, which is usually the meat of your pet's food. If your pet has an allergic reaction, the solution could be trying a type of food with a different protein source. At Lakeshore Animal Clinic, we believe in Hills Prescription Diets, as they provide many food options for an allergic pet.

If your pet is having skin problems, we recommend Hills Prescription D/D Diet. D/D comes in three flavors, potato & salmon, potato & duck, and potato & venison because we know that pets can be picky. These three diets are very good for skin conditions because salmon, duck, and venison are low on the list of common protein allergens. The formulations have extra ingredients that promote healthy skin and help give your pet a glossy, soft coat.

If your pet is still having allergic reactions to these diets, it could mean that he or she is allergic to salmon and duck, in which case we would recommend trying Hills Prescription Z/D diet. Z/D is an allergen-free diet, which means all the protein and carbohydrates have been hydrolyzed (this is to break down these allergens so small that the body cannot recognize its source). This diet is great for pets with skin problems and different kinds of allergies. Your pet can also have allergies to things in the environment, such as mold, pollen or dust. If you suspect that your pet may have an allergy, bring them in and consult with one of our knowledgeable veterinarians.
